“What do you think, Caspyr?” Jonn asked the Minister of Defense. “Forty-eight hours furlough? They did just pull off three impossible missions in a row.”

“I think that’s fair,” General Royst agreed with a smirk.

“They weren’t impossible, Jonn,” I said with a little humility. “If you think they were, you should change the definition of ‘Impossible’ to something like ‘Dex and Rilar just haven’t done it yet.’”

“That isn’t a bad idea,” Harrana piped up. “Jonn, I need to speak with you alone, at your earliest convenience. It’s important.”

“Of course, Harrana,” Jonn agreed with a smile.

“I need to get Avenger back to Helliot II,” Mom said. “Are you sure your fleet will follow my orders, Harrana?”

“Of course, Stase,” the Pirate Queen replied, suddenly on friendly terms with my mother. “I gave them specific directions to follow your orders as they would follow mine. Quizzer is reliable, which is why I chose him as my second-in-command. You can trust him.”

“Umm, what just happened, here?” I asked in disbelief. “Where are the real Stase Relway and Harrana Bloodskull, and what have you two done with them?”

“He’s adorable, isn’t he?” Mom said, smiling at Harrana.

“He does not realize that two formerly bitter enemies can become friends, apparently,” Harrana laughed along with Mom. “He’s definitely cute, though.”

“The universe is ending,” I snorted. “Fine, whatever. You two are besties now. Got it.”

“You see? He catches on quickly, when someone spells it out for him,” Mom looked pointedly at me for the last part.

“I’m a densenut, Mom,” I smiled back. “I’ve come to grips with my affliction. You should’ve known that, a long time ago.”

“Anyway, I should get going, while Harrana and Jonn have their meeting,” Mom said, giving her new bestie a hug. Then she gave me and Rilar hugs too. She shook General Royst’s, Jonn’s and Director Lelidar’s hands, and then she walked out of the office.

“What just happened?” I asked. Mom has never been overly affectionate. The hugs had kind of taken me by surprise.

“Stase just needed to learn how to loosen up,” Harrana shrugged. “She was always wound so tightly. We got to know each other better, and now we are friends.”

“Miracles have been known to happen,” Jonn offered with a shrug.

“Back to business, if we may?” Lelidar said, clearing her throat. She signaled with two fingers, and two CBI agents moved forward from seemingly out of nowhere. They each had a pair of cuffs, and they took the two enemy spooks into custody.

“As a representative of the United Systems Confederacy, I hereby place you both under formal arrest as War Prisoners. You will be treated humanely, in accordance with our laws and the Prisoner Statutes of Warfare,” Lelidar informed the Heggie spies, giving them the more polished and official version of what I’d told them back on Helliot II.

“I’m tempted to put medals on your chests here and now, you two,” Jonn said to Rilar and me, as the CBI spooks took the enemy spooks away.

“We have enough medals already,” Rilar read my mind, but voiced my thoughts before I could.
